                        2002 Denali earthquake: An earthquake measuring 7.9 on the moment magnitude scale occurs near Denali National Park in Alaska. The earthquake was the largest recorded in the interior of the United States for more than 150 years and was the strongest ever recorded in the interior of Alaska. No fatalities and only a few injuries were reported.

                         Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) in Political Union with the United States. The CNMI Government adopted its own constitution in 1977, and the constitutional government took office in January 1978. The Covenant was fully implemented November 3, 1986, pursuant to Presidential Proclamation no. 5564, which conferred United States citizenship on legally qualified CNMI residents.

                        MGM's film "The Wizard of Oz" makes its TV debut on the CBS network. This marks the first time a major Hollywood film running more than ninety minutes is televised uncut in one evening. Up to then, only B-movies and British films had been telecast, often edited or in two parts if they ran more than ninety minutes. The longest film telecast prior to this was Olivier's version of "Richard III", which, unlike "Oz", was somewhat edited and not telecast in prime time.
